30 Seconds to Mars is a popular modern rock band founded in 1998 in Los Angeles, California. The band is comprised of Jared Leto on vocals and rhythm guitar, Tomo Milicevic on lead guitar and keyboard, and Shannon Leto on drums and percussion. Bassist Tim Kelleher performs live with the band, replacing original bassist Matt Wachter, although bass tracks are laid down for albums by Milicevic and Jared Leto. Other musicians to have played or toured with the band include keyboardist Braxton Olita and guitarist Solon Bixler.

The band has so far released three full length studio albums, beginning with 2002′s self-titled album. They soon followed this with 2005′s ‘A Beautiful Lie’. ‘Lie’ was a critically acclaimed album, based largely on the strength of the single ‘The Kill (Bury Me)’. 30 Seconds to Mars’ most recent studio effort, ‘This Is War’, was released in late 2009. They have also had a pair of extended play releases, 2007′s ‘AOL Sessions Undercover’ and 2008′s ‘To the Edge of the Earth’.

Since their formation in Los Angeles in 1998, 30 Seconds To Mars has searched for a perfect lineup. Jared and Shannon Leto started the band on their own as a family musical project with Jared providing guitar, keyboards, vocals, and lyrics and Shannon playing drums. Jared also has a significant and prolific acting career.

Shortly after forming, a bassist was added in the form of Matt Wachter who played with the band until 2007. The first two guitarists added to 30 Seconds To Mars, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, quit shortly after joining due to touring conflicts. Then along came a guitarist named Tomo Milievi who remains in the band to this day.

There are currently three official members of the band and two touring members. Jared Leto plays rhythm guitar and keyboards and provides the lead vocals and most of the songwriting. Shannon Leto plays drums and other percussion instruments. Tomo Milievi plays lead quitar, violin, and occasional keyboards. When on tour, Matt McJunkins plays bass guitar and Braxton Olita plays rhythm guitar, keyboards, and provides back-up vocals. 30 Seconds to Mars is a rock band that was formed in 1998 by brothers Jared and Shannon Leto. Jared is perhaps the most recognizable member as he is well-regarded Hollywood actor. However, the band’s music has not suffered in the shadows of the lead-vocalist and rhythm guitarist. They were much of garage band only playing at small venues until 2002 when they released their self-titled debut album “30 Seconds to Mars.” That album spawned hit songs like, ‘Capricorn (A Beautiful Name)’ and ‘Edge of the Earth’. Capricorn managed to reach the rock charts, peaking at 31. Devoted fans, however, feel these two offerings did not display the depth and range of the group.
